July wrap up 2022

Published 11:00 on 28 Jul 2022
A wrap-up of July for our members!
Optimist Worlds - Harry Pilkington
The Optimist world championships for 2022 were held in Bodrum Turkey, with racing from the 27th of June to the 7th of July.

Harry Pilkington was one of five Aussies to make the worlds team, after his results at nationals in January this year. Harry's home club is in Hobart, Tasmania at RYCT, but considers WSC his 'sailing home away from home'.

Harry and his family have spent time at WSC over the last few months sailing at the club with our junior fleet and training with coaches Alex Zimmermann and Archie Cropley. We are super proud to have been a part of the journey and congratulate Harry on his determination and enthusiasm to represent Australia.

The championship featured 276 sailors from 61 countries and was the scene of unique challenges. The white houses of Bodrum, accompanied by their historical texture and windy weather, gave the participants an unforgettable experience.

The Aussies gave the racing after a good crack, with the range of conditions making for tough and tight racing. Harry finished up in 178th. Congratulations to the team, a fantastic achievement to represent Australia on the world stage. Full results here

Aarhus European Championships

In July, the European championships were held in Aarhus, Denmark. From the 5th to the 10th of July, three classes will revisit Aarhus for the European Championships in 49s, 49erFX, and Nacra 17. In a week of shifting and gusty offshore winds, the Aussies did amazing on the scoreboard with the majority of the sailors making gold or silver fleet. The European championships was the last regatta within the circuit, with sailors making their way over to Canada for the World Championships in late august. We look forward to seeing results there.

49er results below:

  • Jack Ferguson and Max Paul in 24th;
  • Tom Cunich and Miles Davey in 40th;
  • Otto Henry and Flynn Twomey in 64th

49FX results below:

  • Olivia Price and Evie Haseldine in 32nd
  • Mina Ferguson and Maeleline McLeay in 60th

Schools team racing 2022

Over the school holidays, from the 5th to the 10th of July, several schools from around Sydney competed in the Secondary Schools Team Racing Regatta. The regatta was at GRSC and provided some close racing with conditions varying over the week.

Scots College and Ascham school placed 1st in their respective fleets. Congratulations to all students, teachers and coaches involved - this is an amazing outcome! This was Scots' third win in the past four National Championships.

Both schools train out of WSC and have been putting in excellent training over the last few months in preparation. We are glad to be part of the journey and are stoked for their efforts.

Mark Foy 18 footer European championships 2022

In Lake Garda, Italy, the Mark Foy European Championship regatta was held for the 18-footers class for its 14th season. Many WSC sailors keenly represented the country and their sponsors

It was an Australian one-two at the Mark Foy European Championship: Lazarus Capital Partners and The Rag & Famish Hotel in the first two overall positions. The best Europeans were the Germans on Black Knight, down to third place overall.

The regatta came to an end with 12 races in total. The weeks' conditions on Garda Trentino were challenging. The regatta outcome was a huge success for Aussies and the competing WSC sailors. Lazarus Capital took out 1st place, The Rag and Famish Hotel took out second with sailors Harry Price, Josh McKnight and Harry Hall in the boat.

We look forward to seeing these racers back in the heat for the Australian 18-footers season, starting in October!

Waszp Games 2022

In early July, the Waszp international games for 2022 were on at Lake Garda. Jack Ferguson took out 17th place - great results after a break during 49er season.

The racing in the gold fleet was incredible, with any small error punished heavily, just what you want in one-design high performance racing. The points from 4th 10th is incredibly tight, while it seems the top three may have gapped the fleet a little. It set up an intriguing final day.

Congratulations Jack!
