WSC ILCA (Laser) Youth Squad

Woollahra Sailing Club and NB Sailsports have partnered to deliver a world-class ILCA Youth Program in Sydney, designed to support junior and youth sailors as they develop their racing skills and build a lifelong connection to the sport.

The WSC ILCA Youth Squad provides a genuine pathway for sailors who want structured coaching, regular training and support at regattas. The program focuses on the real development of each sailor, guided by experienced coaches and sailing professionals who understand both competitive racing and long-term athlete progression.

Sailors in the program are expected to have their own boat and to participate in club racing at Woollahra Sailing Club. A limited number of boat charters may also be available through NB Sailsports.

Learn to ILCA at Woollahra Sailing Club

For sailors who are new to the ILCA class, Woollahra Sailing Club also offers Learn to ILCA sessions using club-supplied boats. These sessions are designed to help sailors build the skills and confidence needed to progress into the WSC ILCA Youth Squad.

This pathway is ideal for sailors who are completely new to sailing an ILCA and are preparing to join a more structured youth racing program. Learn to ILCA is suitable for sailors over 55kg.

Training Schedule

The WSC ILCA Youth Squad runs regular training sessions during the year, including:

• Fridays and Sundays during the winter terms
• Additional Wednesdays and Saturdays when demand requires, typically in Term 1 and Term 4
• Coaching and transport support for ILCA regattas, provided through NB Sailsports

This schedule gives sailors consistent on-water training combined with access to regatta preparation and event-day support.

What to Expect from the ILCA Youth Program

Expert Coaching

The program is led by highly respected sailor and coach Rob McMillan, delivering structured, professional coaching tailored to the needs of each sailor. Rob brings extensive experience supporting developing sailors, including work with athletes in Queensland and the Japan Sailing Team.

Tailored Sailor Development

The program is designed specifically for junior and youth sailors moving into or progressing within the ILCA classes. Training focuses on holistic development, helping sailors improve both on and off the water through coaching in:

• Racing strategy
• Boat handling
• Physical preparation
• Regatta performance

Specialist coaches may also be involved to support key aspects of sailor development.

Fun, Engaging and Supportive Environment

The WSC ILCA Youth Squad combines serious development with a strong focus on enjoyment, teamwork and community. Sessions are designed to be engaging, social and rewarding, while helping sailors build the skills they need to succeed in competitive sailing.

Beyond training sessions at Woollahra Sailing Club, the partnership with NB Sailsports offers broader support to help sailors and families participate more easily, including:

• Professional logistics assistance
• Priority charter boat access
• Regatta coaching at major state and national events

Parent and Carer Involvement

As a community-based sailing club, Woollahra Sailing Club values the involvement of parents and carers. All club members contribute as volunteers, and there are many ways to get involved depending on your interests, skills and availability.
